Snowed under

Air-sourced heat pumps are apparently the way forward. This ingenious method manages to extract heat from the air outside - even at sub-zero temperatures - and funnel it into your home to provide heating and hot water. It's not a cheap thing though. This fridge-in-reverse still manages to slurp up copious amounts of electricity in the process. And when the weather goes sub-zero? It works its magic, but at a cost. And when the internal thermistor decides to play up - the thing that tells the unit when to defrost itself - it carries on trying to extract heat from solid ice. This was costing us £30 a day in electricity at one point. This issue has finally been sorted though, but that is no consolation for our finances.

Christmas was cold, but pleasant enough. Vinyl wise, I received a copy of the 2022 remix of the Beatles 1966 LP Revolver. An album that only happened because of computers, AI, and musical stem separation. Originally recorded on a four track recorder, the album was given the most apalling stereo treatment back then. On the opening track Taxman, drums, bass and guitar are all shunted to the left, with George's vocal in the centre, while on the right, a lonely shaker. It is very uncomfortable to listen to. Eleanor Rigby on headphones was also impossible to properly digest, with the strings dead centre, and Paul's vocal firmly on the right. Why? I know the 60's was about experimentation and drugs etc, but mixing in stereo deserves respect. Giles Martin managed to sort this by remixing the album and presenting it in a listenable manner.

Also on vinyl is a copy of Meghan Trainor's first album Title. Thououghly unfashionable, maybe. But what does fashion matter? Music is made to be enjoyed, and if I want to enjoy some musical candyfloss once in a while, I jolly well will! There's more to music than bloody Radiohead.
